35TH ANNUAL CHRISTKINDL MARKET MARKET THEME

The city of INNSBRUCK
         & THE AUSTRIAN TYROL

Each year, the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market selects a theme for the Market. The theme features a story or culturally significant icon from a selected city in Germany or Austria. The theme for the 2024 Christkindl Market is the Austrian City of Innsbruck.

Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol, has a population of about 133,000. It is located in the western part of Austria, in a wide valley between the Alps. Innsbruck is internationally known as a center of winter sports. The city hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, and the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics as well as the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics. The city was the historic seat of the Tyrolean princes and early Habsburg emperors. Landmarks include the Golden Roof attached to the 15th century royal residence, the Imperial Palace (Hofburg), the Castle Church (Hofkirche), the Cathedral of St. James, and the Ambras Castle.

Innsbruck hosts four Christmas Markets each year: The Old Town Christmas Market located in front of the landmark Golden Roof in the oldest part of Innsbruck, the Maria Theresien Strasse Christmas Market, the Christmas Market at Marktplatz, and the Hungerburg Christmas Market on the mountain, accessed by the funicular railway. Many of the foods, gifts, and customs typically associated with German markets can be found in the Austrian Christmas Markets.

This year’s pewter Christkindl Ornament features images of Innsbruck landmarks. Please stop by our Christkindl Corner Gift Shop to purchase an ornament.
