The City of Salzburg is located on the border of Austria and Germany and sits at the foot of the Alps. Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, the Old City (Altstadt) possesses some of the best-preserved examples of Medieval and Baroque architecture. On the north side of the Salzach River, which runs through the city, is the 19th century New City (Neustadt).
Salzburg has a strong association with music. It is the birthplace of Classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The city is also known to many as the setting for the film, The Sound of Music, based on the life of Maria von Trapp. Some of the movie’s scenes were filmed in Salzburg, while other city landmarks, such as the St. Peter’s Cemetery, served as inspiration for scenes filmed on sets.
Salzburg landmarks include the Salzburg Cathedral whose plaza is the setting for Salzburg’s Christkindl Market; the Festspielhaus, a concert hall constructed within an old quarry and Sound of Music location; and the Mirabell Palace and Gardens where the “Do, Re, Mi” scene from The Sound of Music was filmed. The city is dominated by the Hohensalzburg Fortress, a castle which sits high on the Mönchsberg, the rocky hill above the city. Twelve miles north of Salzburg is the town of Oberndorf, the birthplace of the beloved carol “Silent Night” composed by Franz Gruber and Fr. Joseph Mohr for Christmas Eve 1818. To the south rise the dramatic and beautiful Alps.
Traditional Austrian foods such Wienerschnitzel, Strudel, and Tafelspitz are popular among Salzburgers. A favorite dessert is Nokerl, a vanilla-flavored soufflé topped with powdered sugar, intended to resemble the snow-covered Alps. It is sometimes served with a raspberry syrup.
